The Plot Twist tells of an unexpected or surprising tangent in a tale that most wouldn’t see coming. Our plot twist, planting Saperavi in the Clare Valley.

This Saperavi offers a strong liquorice nose, complemented by flavours of plum, blackberry and a hint of dark chocolate and vanilla.

  • The 2024 season began with a dry winter and early spring, prompting early budburst and flowering. Rain before Christmas replenished soil moisture, followed by a dry summer and autumn with low disease pressure—providing excellent ripening conditions. A severe frost event in late October across areas in the south of the valley led to some growers being significantly impacted.

A much earlier start to harvest in 2024 than the later harvest of the previous year. Ideal weather conditions during January coupled with a very dry February offered ideal ripening conditions. Riesling ripened relatively early, however red varieties required more time on the vine to develop depth of flavour. Overall, growers reported lower yields however quality of fruit is excellent – a vintage to look out for, especially Riesling.

Kind Words

  • "Impenetrable purple-black colour. The saperavi Georgian name translates to inky – very apt. Dried herbs, rosewood, undergrowth, earth, truffle, dark fleshy berries on the bouquet. It has the scent and taste of an earthy, rustic wine in touch with the land. The variety’s distinctive tannic backbone is a feature of the palate and, hence, a feature which can’t be ignored. It asks for a food accompaniment, preferably protein-rich. Drink now–2036." 91pts

  • "This settles well into the variety, though you'll have to like reds with a little cloying texture and lots of ripe, sweet fruitiness. Forest berry coulis, gingersnap biscuits, licorice, game meat, dill herbal lift, new leather and milk chocolate – right on. Lots of slosh to texture, a light shaping from tannins, too. Pleasure zone stuff." 93pts
